Somebody to Love

an exhibition by Doug D’Arcy

The exhibition features portraits that I painted of a collection of friends, neighbours and models. They were ten in all.
Portraiture is a bit of an exploration and once I start I often find myself painting two or three different paintings of each sitter. Hence twenty paintings.
For the show I asked each of the subjects to send me two or three photos of themselves that they liked, and asked them to explain why they liked those particular images. You can see the photos and captions by clicking on their names in the gallery.
People often say they don’t like looking at portraits of people they don’t know so on one level this is designed to help with that. .

But multiple portraits can work like a hall of mirrors and I think having the other images works in the same way.
